Scotton Shoe Shop was started by Coy "Crip" Scotton in 1934. Suffering from Polio, Coy was restricted from farming, manufacturing, and other various jobs; therefore he went to apprentice school to learn the trade to become a shoe cobbler. Coy was a fine craftsman in his leather work as he at the time made leather sandals. Farmers also depended on him to repair the mule collars. Coy's son, Curtis began working with his dad in 1957. Curtis farmed in the Summer and learned the trade while working in the Winter which was their busiest time. On New Years Eve of 1960, Coy lost his life in an automobile accident. Curtis and his wife Eulaia took over the business. They raised their four children Brian, Kevin, Raymond, and Melanie in the business as they lived in the back of the building. The boys would shine shoes as soon as they were tall enough to see over the machine. They enjoyed pretending to be cobblers. Curtis was called to preach. In 1981, Brian started working in the business.

Brian and his wife Becky now operate Scotton Shoe Shop located in the heart of Historic Downtown Madison, North Carolina. Their oldest son, Kurt is now learning the trade as the fourth generation of family shoe repair.
